Just for Beginners
We encourage students who have never played an instrument to attend our Summer Band Camp. Most students who join band have never had any experience playing a band instrument!
First, DO NOT simply go out and purchase or rent an instrument of interest. Picking an instrument involves not just interest, but a music professional looking for physical attributes that lend themselves naturally towards particular band instruments. Just for our camp, we have such an event set up. On Tuesday, May 23rd, we will hold an instrument testing day in the Hagerty HS band room between 2:45pm – 6:30pm.
There, your child will have an opportunity to see and play the instruments available in beginning band. The band camp is based on the study of traditional band instruments.
All beginners enrolled in the Band Camp must come to the testing night (unless otherwise tested by their future band teacher). Some instruments are owned by the school while others require a store rental or purchase. There will be local music store representatives there to service all your musical needs after the try-out testing is complete. It is advised to avoid instrument purchases from certain department stores that are not band specialists. Please allow at least 30 minutes for your testing visit. After completing the online registration form, you will be provided a link to reserve a testing time window. All Beginners should have an instrument on the 1st day of camp.
Just For Jazz Band
Jazz Band is offered to returning band students with at least 1-year of band experience who play a jazz instrument: Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Drum Set, Bass, & Guitar. Baritone may be substituted for trombone & Tuba may be substituted for Bass. Jazz Band meets at the beginning of the normal camp day, but separately from beginners. Students who enroll as a “jazz” student must attend the remaining regular band camp day as a “Returning Student”.
